Dr. Donald A. Barnhorst, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Donald A. Barnhorst, Jr., M.D. is the founder of Barnhorst Eye Associates. He is a board certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained cornea specialist who is nationally recognized for his research and contributions to the field of ophthalmology. In 1999, he opened his private practice in Jacksonville and now focuses his practice on corneal, refractive (LASIK), and cataract surgery while also providing routine eye care services.
After graduating from medical school at Georgetown University where he was elected in the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society, he completed an Ophthalmology residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he was chosen as Chief Resident in Ophthalmology during his final year of training. In addition Dr. Barnhorst received subspecialty training in cornea, refractive surgery and advanced anterior segment microsurgery during a fellowship at the Eye and Ear Institute at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Barnhorst has extensive experience in many types of refractive and corneal procedures and has been performing laser vision correction since its FDA approval in 1995.
Dr. Barnhorst is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the International Society of Refractive Surgeons and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has done research in the area of Laser Vision Correction and corneal disease and has numerous publications in major Ophthalmologic professional journals. His research has been presented to a host of national and international ophthalmic organizations. He has been a reviewer for the journal Ophthalmology and is currently the head of the Ophthalmology department at the Baptist Medical Center-Beaches hospital.
He is married and has four children who keep him busy when he’s not at work.
Dr. Jennifer Balo, O.D.
Dr. Jennifer Balo, OD earned her doctorate of optometry in 2015 from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. During school, she completed externships in primary care, contact lens fitting, ocular disease, pediatrics, vision therapy and low vision. Clinical training included rotations through the low vision department at the VA hospital in West Haven, CT, the University of Florida Ophthalmology department in Jacksonville, FL, and a community health clinic in Chicago, IL. During all four years of school, Dr. Balo worked in a Chicago clinic dedicated to providing free eye exams to underserved school-aged children. Dr. Balo also had the privilege to join with optometrists and fellow students for three weeklong service trips to provide free eye exams and glasses to poor populations in Honduras and Belize.
She is board certified by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. Dr. Balo is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Northeast Florida Optometric Association.
Dr. Balo is thrilled to join the Barnhorst Eye Associates team dedicated to giving compassionate and high quality care to each patient. Providing comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages and fitting contact lenses with the best technology are particular passions.
Dr. Balo is happily married to her husband and together they own a Devon Rex cat named Waldo.
